    • It took me a while to get into this book, but once I did it was with intensity and fervor. I simply could not put it down. "The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street" is a massive, 70 year long story about a poor immigrant, Malka, who comes to America with few resources and paves her way to riches, and all the things that happen to her in between. It is the American Dream, critically done by a talented author. Gilman has done a masterful job of creating a main character, Lillian, who is not at all l [...]

    • I loved this book! What a great story. I love when writers weave real life events into fiction. This one includes the struggles of immigrants in New York at the turn of the centure, McCarthy-ism, and WWII to name a few.

    • Heartbreaking and funnyI found this book to be an easy, relaxing story. I love the characters and felt I was there on Mulberry Street 1900's.

    • I chose to read this book because of the history behind immigrant life on the Lower East Side in the early 20th century. It is clear that Susan Jane Gilman did a meticulous job researching the history behind her novel; the details of immigrant life during that time period are incredible. However, by the time the novel is halfway done, Gilman has moved on to tell the story of the remainder of Lillian's life. Gilman also did a fantastic job describing the ice cream industry and adapting the histor [...]

    • So many of the historical fiction books I've encountered star an interesting, intelligent, vivacious heroine of some sort, who overcomes terrific odds and somehow comes out on top; either rich, happy, successful, or with her true love. She looks back on her life with a sense of peacefulness or contentment. This book was different. The heroine was everything you'd want to read about. She overcomes terrific odds and marries the man of her dreams. But, like a real person, the insurmountable odds br [...]

    • This book features one of the most compelling protagonists--she is a nasty, scheming lady who is also a wonderful businesswoman. She transforms herself from the Jewish-Russian Malka to the Italian-American Catholic Lillian and becomes a successful ice cream business owner. She is such a conniving person that the tale of her life including her scheming father and her handsome but illiterate and stuttering husband make this a fun and quick read. How can a book about ice cream not be delicious?

    • good story darlings. rags to riches story, Malka Treynovsky to Lillian Dunkle. my ancestors must have come from around where this story started, Vishnev, Russia because all of her Yiddish idioms were very familiar to me. and the story goes from Russia, to the lower east side, to Long Island, to Brooklyn, to Manhattan and Florida. places I can relate to. and it's all about ice cream, who can't relate to that!

    • This is a pretty easy read. Melodramatic and funny at same time, reminds me of a Jackie Collins book!! I read for a book club and it kept me interested, a Jewish woman who comes to America is raised by Italians If you like Jackie Collins this is a good book

    • Interesting take on rags to riches immigration story. The story is told by the main character in the 1980's looking back over her life. Lots of unexpected twists and turns. Good summer read!

    • I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the journey it took me on through American history as it applied to immigrants as they built big businesses.

    • This is a long book, but even if it was three times longer, I would still not want this book to end! This book was a joy to read and I recommend it highly!

    • Jewish family comes to America poor, after much, becomes The Ice Cream Queen, but to become this, lives with Italians, revenge, love, etc.

    • I scream for ice creamI enjoyed this book. It was very easy to get lost in the narrative and picture yourself stepping into the main charActers life.
