    • "Love Poems for Cannibals" is a brilliant collection. In between reams of irony and a sense of futility, Raymond Keen announces the answers: truth and love. He derides the creators of The Vietnam War (in which he participated), describes the worthy-though-fragile quest for religion, and questions a society that seems bent on stroking its own ego. Keen points directly at our institutional ironies, and puts them in their place, poetically.Mr. Keen uses setting to create ironic humor: we find Freud [...]

    • When I read these poems I thought I could feel the emotions the author has put into this work: enjoyment, energy, frustration Some of his poems reminded me of Brecht, some of Gottfried Benn and a few of Wondratschek. Not so much as far as the style is concerned, it is more Raymond Keen's analytical approach that seemed similar at times. There is one poem entitled "Freud at the Dentist". It is a little gem, mischievous and entertaining. Then there are poems like "Red, White & Blue", which you [...]

    • Reading Raymond Keen's book of poetry is one of the occasions when the words take the reader on a ride to another time and place, where one becomes captivated by the rich surroundings provided by the poet. The poems are thoughtful yet visceral with the imagery that elicits an emotional attachment from the reader. Having experienced Viet Nam firsthand during that conflict, I was moved by the close relationship between our mutual recollections of our personal experiences. Love Poems for Cannibals [...]

    • A wide range of diverse poetry with surprising light and dark elements fused together. A deliciously dangerous collection that includes historical figures, celebrities, war, and other subjects. I just love a book that you can pull down from the library shelf to read time and time again, never getting bored - this is one of those. who says 'Poetry is a thing of the past. a dying Genre. With such unforgettable prose, it leaves you wanting more. You get it all; humor and frightful darkness taking y [...]

    • Raymond Keen is an author of rare courage and honesty. His voice is powerful, lucid, and clear, rendering raw experience in a direct, unflinching manner. He immerses us in deep and difficult subjects with easy transparency and consummate mastery. Especially fascinating and amusing are his insightful takes on an all-star cast of famous figures, from Sigmund Freud to Albert Einstein to Pete Rose, culminating in the astonishing Oprah-Harpo connection. It’s a unique thrill to have Ray’s wonderfu [...]

    • This poetry book is a standout amongst poetry books. Tales of war, the road to spirituality and almost a sarcasm/wit about life in general. I'm a fan of satire and Keen does it well! For poetry lovers - the book is a must.

    • Raymond Keen has given the world a gift of compelling poems that explore the depths of human mystery, ranging from hallucinations in Vietnam to fatwahs by Osama bin Laden. One of his poems moved me to the core of my being, made all the more important because he and I were in Vietnam at about the same time. Here are some snippets from the poem:The ensign remembersWhat Marine Corporal PruettTold him early that morning,The story of shooting someoneWho was running awayIn black pajamasAt a distance of [...]

    • The arrow-like words of Raymond Keen tear through the frightfulness of the past 50 years in these poems. He saw it, lived it, felt it and even more thought about it. Although the collection of poems starts with Vietnam War and closes (but the last) with stanzas about the horrors of World War II, the turbulence in us does not come from war stories. It is created by the truth-seeking of its author, not hiding that our whole current world is “dinky dau”. From politics and power to the great per [...]

    • “Love Poems for Cannibals” plays a series of poems set along eight theme lines. These theme lines of Raymond Keen’s book are contained in year defined era subsets. Keen makes his poems into Impressionistic paintings of experiences and ideas and one seems to feel them rather than read them. And, in these feelings, you learn his opinions as he thoughtfully editorializes most of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st. There are elements of humor which help ease the reader into idea [...]

    • The title & cover of this book lure one in, then once you're lured -Raymond Keen hits you with his poetry.Keen's voice is satirical and in-your-face. He is constantly questioning and dissecting -sometimes with sarcasm and wit, often with skepticism and darkness. His poetry varies in style. There are poems that are conversational and more accessible to the masses. Then there are those that are styled using repetition and verse. The book is delivered in eight sections exploring war, religion, s [...]

    • This volume of poetry, composed over many decades, is brilliant, dark, and deeply subversive. As the author intends, these poems cut through the tumult of the twentieth century and leave our comfortable clichés in tatters. Yet some are hilarious, like Freud in the dental chair, and Albert Einstein in a corporate-style slide show. I also loved the travelling Christ with no street address. Raymond Keen is a well respected poet whose work has appeared in many journals. I hope his next poem will co [...]

    • Blaring, Daring, RealEdgar Allan Poe is the author that came to mind when I began reading Raymond Keen’s Love Poems for Cannibals. These poems are very cerebral. They really, I mean REALLY, make you sit back and think. My personal favorite is ‘I Love the Traveling Christ’. So much meaning in so little words. Amazing.
