    • This is a great book for dabbling in math. It's very readable, not least on account of its extreme shortness (fewer than 200 very small, mostly illustrated pages). It explains the theory and mathematical purpose behind a lot of otherwise inscrutable things in a very accessible way. My only critique is that the author does, occasionally, make a slip and forget just how ignorant the general public is. At one point, in explaining some of the theory behind sine and cosine, he suddenly slipped the Gr [...]


    • Great for twelve-year-olds; not so great for people who pick up pop math more or less at random on the assumption people don't put children's books in the adults section.It's basically all the usual things from Pythagoras to chaos theory, minus some substance and plus a whole lot of genuinely useless illustrations. The only new bit is (as it often is) a bit of original research by the author involving pendula, briefly demonstrated here by the man himself, but not really addressed satisfactorily [...]

    • Acheson touches upon an interesting collection of mathematical concepts, but never very deeply. Consequently, the book presents many "cool mathematical facts" without any backup. But then again, his book is meant more as a mathematical primer and as something to whet one's mathematical appetite. I imagine this book would be really well-suited for older children (and particularly precocious young children) who like math.


    • A fun book to read about mathematics, nothing more than a secondary education level needed. This shows why math is fun, and why anyone whould want to do math all day.Also very helpful for math teachers, it shows nice real world problems that can be solved with not too much mathematics. Or it shows, for example, why proofs are necessary, in an example that is completely understandable by 14 year old pupils.


    • This book was a fantastic read, starting from very simple maths and gradually getting more complicated, it kept my interest throughout the entire thing. Will be looking out for more from this author, excellent stuff.


    • This is a quick read and a nice little book. It covers a large amount of mathematics in an approachable way. The goal is more to show that math is cool than actually teach you how to do it. I don't think you need any background in math to read, understand and enjoy this book.


    • I bought the book after reading the few chapters at the store. I think I liked it, It's small, concise and straight to the point. It assumes a "high-school" knowledge of Math if that makes sense.

    • One of my all time favourite maths books, fantastic. Easy going, covers some interesting maths without getting too technical. This book is one of the reasons I love maths.
